Our Conductor - Justin Fung

                                                        

Justin Fung is the principal conductor of the Swinsian Ensemble, North Hertfordshire youth orchestra and Royston string orchestra.


Born in Hong Kong, Justin grew up in the North of England and Scotland and currently enjoying a busy career as a conductor and theory teacher in London. He graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where he studied composition and conducting. As a composer, Justin’s works have been performed by ensembles such as the Paragon Ensemble, Symposia, RSAMD Plug Festival. He has been resident composer for 'Panopticon Project' in Glasgow working with Scottish poet Liz Lochhead and a theatre production of 'MacBeth' for the Shakespeare in the city festival in Glasgow.



As a conductor, Justin has held conductor positions with the Amadeus Orchestra, University of Glasgow, Stirling University, the Kelvin Ensemble and the Glasgow Contemporary Music Ensemble. Justin studied with Alasdair Mitchell at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He then continued his studies privately with James Lowe in Edinburgh, Neil Thomson, Lionel Friend in London and with Colin Metters, George Hurst and Adrain Gnam in master classes. Abroard, Justin studied opera conducting with Julius Kalmar and Romolo Gessi at OperAverona in Italy and conducted a concert performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni with Orchestra Filarmonia Venetain. More recently, he has been awarded a full scholarship from Haydn Sinfonietta Wein to study conducting with Manfred Huss in Vienna.



Justin has conducted many orchestras and ensembles in the UK, Europe and China. His recent concert appearances have included performances with the Haydn Sinfonietta Wein in Vienna; Chamber Academy Ochestra in London; Amadeus Orchestra in various cities of China; Orchestra Filarmonia Veneta in Verona; the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra in Vilnus; the Kelvin Ensemble in Glasgow and a few cities in Ireland; the Scottish Borders Community Orchestra in the Scottish Borders and the CR:ACC Ensemble in Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Glasgow International Festival of visual art, University of York and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
